As Murray and I have worked on this limited edition of the opera, we said to each other that it was worth the trouble if only to have a document that the opera existed. My favorite piece of this multi-volume thing is the interview of Murray with scholar/composer/colleague Michael Hicks. Murray talks about what music means, how to listen to it, and, of course, the politics of people responding to music.
For me, the experience of creating the opera was more or less ideal. But it passed in a blur, and as I tried to think of a way to grab a piece of the thing and hold it fast, this fancy-pants combination of its various components slowly (really slowly) began to look less like a vanity project and instead of something that has lasting significance.
