Making the Print
The print will be a combination of etching and colored monotype. Each sheet will go through the press two times: first, for the colors which are painted onto a stencil/template (note the color key at left); and second, for the etching (black) which is incised into a copperplate with a diamond-tipped tool.
Kent paints the stencil with the colored inks. This must be done quickly; otherwise the inks will dry, clot, and cause havoc in the press.
The stencil is a sheet of clear plexiglas to make alignment easier.
The painted stencil is placed on top of the copperplate to ensure it aligns with the etching. If the registration is off, the final image will be blurry.
The stencil is run through the press, and the colored images are transferred to the paper. Next, the inked plate is positioned again on the press bed.
Kent has inked the plate and pushed the ink into the grooves. (The ink on the surface of the plate is wiped clean before printing.)
The paper goes through the press a second time with the copperplate. Kent pulls away the paper to reveal the finished print.
